A One-Day Trip Saved Her Life: Maria’s Story

In June 2024, Steiger team members Adri and Yvonne had planned a three-day Impact Trip from Madrid to Barcelona. Their hearts were full of expectation, but nothing went as planned.
Just hours into their journey, a massive power outage brought their train to a standstill. Stuck for 10 hours with no clear information, they found themselves reflecting on the situation, uncertain whether they would even make it to Barcelona.
Eventually, the train made it to Zaragoza, halfway between Madrid and their destination. Exhausted and confused, Adri and Yvonne found themselves at a crossroads: should they go forward or head back home? “We only have one and a half days left,” Adri thought, “what could we possibly do in that time?”
But in the midst of the uncertainty, they paused to pray. And God's response was clear: Keep going.
When they arrived in Barcelona, their time was short, but God had something powerful in store.
The team hosted a flashmob near one of the city’s main monuments. The place felt strangely empty, most people were likely at a Barcelona football match, but Yvonne sensed God saying: “Go to the center of the square.” So they did.
They formed a circle, each holding signs with opposing words: “Strong” on one side, “Weak” on the other. “Success” on one side, “Anxiety” on the other. After silently displaying the “positive” words, they flipped the signs to reveal the hidden struggles behind them—kneeling in vulnerability as Yvonne proclaimed the hope of Jesus.
Adri kneeled, praying for the message. But in her heart, she wrestled. “God, why are we doing this? There’s no one here.”
And God gently replied, “Be still. Pray for what she’s saying.”
Then she noticed “Maria,” a young girl standing in front of her. Adri felt God nudge her to speak with her once the flashmob ended.
She approached quietly and sat beside her, saying nothing at first. Then Maria turned to Adri and said, “All those emotions you showed… they’re exactly what I’m feeling right now. Especially the one that says ‘Strong’ but behind it is ‘Weak.’”
Adri listened in silence as she continued. “I was ready to take my life tonight.” Her words hit like a wave.
She shared how she had been giving everything to people but receiving nothing in return. Adri gently responded that while she couldn’t fully understand, she knew someone who did: Jesus, who gave everything to those who rejected Him, and still chose to love them.
She looked Adri in the eyes. “It’s crazy. I was having an anxiety attack… trying to distract myself watching people dance. But after they left, my dark thoughts returned. Then your team showed up. You started your message. And now you’re sitting here with me.”
Adri prayed for Maria right there on the street, and she continues to stay in touch with her today.
Reflecting on it all, Adri says, “I kept asking God, ‘What can we even do with just one day?’ And God’s answer was simple: ‘You can save a life.’ When we say yes to God—even in confusion, even when plans fall apart—he always shows us the power of the gospel to change lives.”
