From Doubt to Devotion: Sofia’s Journey to Jesus
“God, what do you want from me? I’ll do anything for you. Here I am, do whatever you want.” This was Sofia’s cry to a God she wasn’t even sure existed.
Sofia’s story didn’t begin in a church or Christian home. In fact, she grew up in a non-religious family that never talked about God. But deep down, something was stirring. Many years ago, she was sitting in her room when she suddenly felt a presence, like God was there. She dropped to her knees and prayed.
Years went by. Life moved on. But when she connected with the Steiger team in Khmelnitskiy, Ukraine, that memory came rushing back. And she started to wonder: could that moment have been real?
Invited by a former atheist friend, Vanya, Sofia joined the team’s Bible study for the non-religious back in December of 2024. She showed up consistently: curious, open, but cautious. She hadn’t given her life to Jesus yet, but she listened, asked good questions, and even joined the team in evangelism.
One day, as a team member was driving her home, she opened up about her parents’ disapproval. “They don’t believe in God and don’t understand why I keep going,” she said. But despite the pressure, something about the community and the message kept drawing her back.
Now, months later, after countless conversations, questions, and moments of prayer, Sofia said yes to Jesus this past April during a church service.
Reflecting on her experience in the Bible studies, she shared, “At first, I thought I had no place at Bible study for the non-religious. I imagined everyone would be well-read and polished, like theologians or philosophers just sitting around! But it turned out that everyone was simply learning together—how to listen, how to express themselves, reflect, and help each other. That kept my curiosity alive. But just as important were the people. Everyone was so different, but each brought something valuable into my life, and that sparked some changes.”
Sofia is now part of the Steiger team and shares the same love of Jesus that changed her life with others in her city.
