In 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul says "When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power".
If you were looking for a guest speaker for a conference you sure wouldn't be inviting this guy. He can't talk that well, he doesn't come across very intelligent, and if there is one thing a good communicator needs, it's confidence. This guy says he is afraid and that he even physically trembles - doesn't sound like a very impressive communicator to me.
This is, of course, the whole point. So where does your faith rest? That's the big question.
We are so the people of plan "B". Just in case it doesn't work out we have a backup plan. So what about doing something with no plan "B". That if God doesn't show His power then you will look stupid. Or maybe you will still look stupid, like Paul did, and that's part of God showing His power. Paul didn't care what people thought of him. He was far more interested in people meeting God than himself looking cool. So do you feel weak? Unqualified? Afraid? Perfect! Just the qualifications God is looking for. Just the sort of person God is looking for to demonstrate His power through. There is a quote from John White - a wise man indeed: "The greatest wars are not won by generals or mighty warriors but by weak and little men who have the courage to obey". And there's the key - having the courage to obey. So have this crazy, radical faith that says "God - I will go anywhere you ask me to go, I will do anything you ask me to do. Because my faith is not in my list of reasons of why I can't do this but it is in You."
So what is God asking you to do? DO IT! Should you be on the missions field in another country? GO! Should you be inviting your neighbour over and boldly telling them about Jesus? DO IT! Should you be starting a new ministry in your church that reaches out to the marginalised in your community? GO FOR IT? Do it because your faith is in God's power. You will be amazed how much Godoves beautiful, simple obedience.
