Principles of the Evangelistic Artists: Creativity Print E-mail
Written by David Pierce

Today's entry is the continuation of a series by David Pierce entitled "Principles of the Evangelistic Artists". This series is a preview of David’s highly anticipated new book for evangelistic artists. David Pierce explains that Christian artists are not normal artists. They should defy the conventions of the typical art scene and play by an entirely different set of rules than the world does.

Christian artists should not let the world set the standard for what we do.

I think many Christian bands make the mistake of just trying to be as good as some other non-Christian band.
For example, if their hero is Nine Inch Nails, they try to be the Christian version of Nine Inch Nails.  It is fine if you like that style of music and you want to play like that, but be more than Nine Inch Nails.

You need to talk about the cross.

It will revolutionize everything.  The only catch is that in order to effectively communicate about the cross, we need our own revelation of what it means.  For this reason, we all have to seek God and ask him to help us understand what the cross is.  Maybe you don’t get it anymore. Maybe it has become just a word to you.  You need to ask God to help you understand and to make it real again, so that you can show it to others.

What gives you authority on stage is what you do off stage.

Why does the Christian art scene today have so little authority? Why is it so passionless and powerless?

I think that one of the significant reasons is that people in the scene have compromised. If you want to be effective in your communication, you need to consider what gives you authority.

I believe that worship can be a profound form of evangelism and I am convinced of the need for artists who evangelistic worship.

Moses, Miriam, and the Israelites sang a powerful song of worship to God after they passed through the Red Sea, and I think it provides a model for the kind of worship we should see today.  The song is found in Exodus 15, and if you read it, you will see just how intense their worship was.  They sang things like, “The horse and its rider, he has hurled into the sea.”  Keep in mind that this is not symbolic; they were not talking about a figurative horse and rider.  They were talking about a literal horse with a real guy on top of it who had been thrown into the sea.

The Bible says that with God, nothing is impossible. So doesn't that mean that with God, nothing is impossible?

Let me encourage you not to be conservative with this principle; in fact, err on the side of being crazy.
Many years ago, I was sitting in my apartment in Amsterdam watching a BBC documentary about an underground festival in the Polish city of Jarocin.  They were interviewing someone from a band called Moscow, and he was talking about his frustrations with life.
